As someone from the Hindi belt, I feel like our language gets treated as a burden to 'impose' rather than what it actually is โ the language most Indians already share and understand. One national language could finally make us feel like one people instead of twenty-nine.
Only about 44% of Indians report Hindi as their first language per the last Census, and anti-Hindi agitations in Tamil Nadu in the 1960s already showed how forcing a single language triggers exactly the kind of regional backlash that threatens unity rather than building it.
