We can't have a rational immigration policy until we actually control who's entering the country. The border has been broken for years, and talking about reform without enforcing it is backwards—it's like trying to fix a leaky bucket without plugging the hole first. We need serious enforcement, better barriers, and resources for enforcement, and then once we've regained control, we can have an honest conversation about who we want to let in and how.
Focusing obsessively on border security is treating the symptom, not the disease. The reason people come illegally is because our legal immigration system is broken—visa caps are too low, processing takes years, and employers rely on exploiting undocumented workers. Fix that broken system first, and you'll reduce illegal immigration naturally. We've thrown billions at enforcement already with little to show for it, while the real solution—making legal immigration viable—keeps getting ignored.
