Mandatory voting would dramatically increase political legitimacy and representation by ensuring every voice counts, not just the most motivated or privileged voters who can easily make it to the polls. Right now we get distorted outcomes where non-voters disproportionately include young people, minorities, and working-class Americans, so politicians ignore their needs. Countries like Australia have shown that compulsory voting boosts turnout, reduces partisan extremism, and forces candidates to appeal to the whole country rather than just their base.
Mandatory voting violates the fundamental American principle of freedom—you can't force people to participate in democracy without turning voting into just another government mandate. It would also flood the system with uninformed, coerced voters who didn't want to be there in the first place, leading to worse decisions. If someone doesn't care enough to show up, that's information in itself; the answer is making voting easier, not penalizing people for choosing not to participate.
