AI is advancing faster than we can understand the risks, and waiting for disaster before acting is reckless. We need binding international agreements on safety standards, testing requirements, and deployment limits before these systems cause irreversible harm—whether that's algorithmic discrimination at scale, autonomous weapons, or AI that we literally can't control. Every major technology from nuclear to biotech needed guardrails; AI is no different.
Heavy regulation will just push AI development to whoever has the fewest restrictions, meaning the most careful and ethical actors get hamstrung while others race ahead anyway. Innovation is how we solve problems—including AI safety problems—and slowing research means we stay vulnerable longer. The benefits of AI for medicine, agriculture, and solving climate change are too important to sacrifice on speculation about hypothetical harms.
