Open-sourcing forces transparency and prevents a few corporations from controlling AI. When models are publicly available, researchers worldwide can audit them for bias, security flaws, and harmful capabilities—something that's impossible with closed black boxes. We've seen the power of open-source software (Linux, Firefox) to democratize technology; AI is too important to be gatekept by a handful of companies racing to market without real accountability.
Forcing open-source kills the incentive to invest billions in AI development. Companies like OpenAI and DeepMind took massive financial risks to build these models—mandating they give away the results stifles innovation and shifts dominance to whoever can just copy and deploy the models cheapest. Open-source also spreads dangerous capabilities to bad actors, terrorists, and authoritarian regimes faster than the safeguards can catch up. Competition works better than regulation here.
