We have to secure our border if we want any functioning immigration system at all. Right now we're basically picking who gets in based on luck and who can afford a coyote, not actual vetting. You can't have unlimited asylum claims without overwhelming your communities—schools, hospitals, and jobs all feel the strain. Countries have borders for a reason, and enforcing them responsibly isn't cruel, it's the baseline for any government.
The US is one of the wealthiest nations on earth and we're turning away people fleeing violence and poverty that our own policies helped create. Our asylum system exists because we recognize that sometimes people have nowhere else to go—and that's a moral obligation, not just a suggestion. Border enforcement and humane asylum processing aren't mutually exclusive; we just choose not to fund it properly because it's politically convenient to pretend they are.
