We can't effectively tackle immigration until we have control of our borders—right now we're just reacting to whatever flows happen to come. Border security is foundational; it gives us the ability to actually enforce immigration law and know who's entering the country. You can't build a fair system on top of chaos, and the asylum system is completely overwhelmed because we haven't secured the border first.
The focus on border walls and enforcement is a distraction from the real problem: our immigration system is stuck in the 1950s and doesn't match economic reality. Spending billions on barriers won't fix the broken visa process, family separation, or the fact that employers break laws hiring undocumented workers with no consequences. We need comprehensive reform—legal pathways, employer accountability, and modernized courts—not another security theater that treats immigration as purely a law-and-order issue.
