Every American's vote should count equally—that's the whole point of democracy. Right now, a candidate can lose by millions of votes nationally but still become president because of a system designed centuries ago for a completely different country. Swing states get obsessive attention while 30+ states are basically ignored. This isn't protecting small states; it's making most voters irrelevant and letting candidates win with less than 50% of the popular vote. We should trust Americans to pick their president directly.
The Electoral College forces candidates to build geographically diverse coalitions instead of just running up the score in a few mega-cities. If we switched to pure popular vote, rural America would be invisible and a handful of urban centers would decide every election. The whole system was designed so that smaller, less-populated states still have a meaningful voice instead of being steamrolled by coastal population centers. Getting rid of it would fundamentally undermine the federalist compromise that holds this country together.
