India has 1.4 billion people and hundreds of millions still living in poverty—we can't ask them to wait for cleaner air while our economy stagnates. Countries like the US and Europe industrialized first and got rich, then cleaned up their act. We need jobs, factories, and growth now so ordinary Indians can escape poverty and afford education for their kids. Environmental regulations are a luxury the developed world can afford; we're still playing catch-up.
We're already choking—Delhi's air is toxic, our rivers are sewage dumps, and climate change will hit India hardest with droughts and floods that destroy crops and livelihoods anyway. Development built on destroyed ecosystems isn't real progress; it just trades tomorrow's catastrophe for today's quick growth numbers. We have the chance to leapfrog dirty industrialization with clean tech and sustainable agriculture, but instead we're repeating the West's mistakes while they lecture us from their clean cities.
